No maintenance, accurate to the second, rugged, WOW!
This is the best all around watch I've ever owned, and I'm a watch nerd.I had one of the first commercially available digital watches that were anywhere near affordable -- sometime around 1975 or so.It was a small brick with a blinking cursor and little else.Batteries lasted a year or so and you only had to set the time every few months.Since then, I've had dozens of watches with a variety of features.Frankly, I love watches.

But, I've never loved a watch and respected a watch like this one.What more can you ask of a watch?It keeps perfect time, thanks to the atomic clock signal from Fort Collins Colorado.It never needs batteries, thanks to the solar charging panels.It can be worn anywhere all the time, thanks to the shock resistance feature and the 200 meter water resistance.What's more, it looks great on your arm and offers not only the time, but the day of the week and the date at a glance.

Want to see the time after dark?Use the high luminescence back light.No hand free to push the button?Set the backlight to come on automatically when you tilt your wrist to 40 degrees toward your face.

Don't worry if you want to leave it in your sock drawer for a week or so.It preserves battery charge by by blanking the display automatically after an hour of darkness and springs back to life when the light hits it again.

This is a thinking watch that has one thing in mind --- doing what you bought it for.I'm tempted to buy another to make sure I can replace it if I ever lose it.That would be a tragedy.

Most complete timepiece on the planet
If you like your watches to be pretty or analog, there is a good chance you may not like this watch.If you want a mens timepiece that is rugged, accurate, and requires no attention from you to remain so - EVER - it does not get any better than this.

This model (Casio MTG-930DA), combines rugged stainless steelconstruction, low power consumption, a very excellant solar charging system, and automatic synchonization with the National Institute of Science and Technology's atomic time standard in Fort Collins, Colorado.You will never need to set this watch if you live with in 2000 miles of Denver (unless you live in a missle silo).It also has an electro-luminescent back light with cleaver "twist of the wrist" activation, a stop-watch (of course), 4 alarms, and several other features most of us will never use.

You should count on paying a local watch shop/jeweler to adjust the band and do the initial timezone/preferences set up on it for you (unless you have some specialized tools and a desire to read a fairly technical manual - I did but I'm a geek).My local Casio watch retailer charged me $5 to adjust the band (I gave him $20 'cause I was ashamed that I had not bought the watch from him in the first place).

The negatives: I could wish this watch were more beautiful.Certainly, its electronics is small enough to put in a more refined "dress" chassis.I, for one, would happily pay a premium for such a model.Also, the MTG's buttons are quite stiff and recessed.This makes them a little difficult to use, particularly for the stop watch functions.All-in-all however, I cannot deduct any stars for these - where it counts, this product possitively shines.

Great looking watch and it does a great job...
I have been a G-shock owner for over 15 years.I have also owned some other brands (Swiss Army, Pulsar, Citizen) and those were some good watches but I always come back to the GShock.

There are several reasons why I like this model of G-shock:

1. G Shock's can never really be considered classy, but this comes a little closer to that designation.I love the steel band and the silver appearance of the watch.It is a watch you can wear hiking (and not be worried that you will break it) and to a night out on the town.

2. Discussion buzz--Few watches can you spend time in a group discussing but this is one watch you can do that with...people are immediately drawn to it because of its appearance (size and color) and it is cool to discuss all the things that this watch can do.

3. Solar--I am tired of replacing batteries in a watch...no need to with this watch.

4. Atomic TimeKeeping--I love how the time is accurate every day.No adjusting.Very cool.

5. Time Zones--If you are traveling quite a bit, it is nice to be able to simply scroll through the time zones and find your location.Nice feature.

Overall--I enjoy this watch because of its functions and its appearance.I also like explaining this watch to other people.This is a great watch...to steal Siskel and Ebert's line, 2 thumbs up!

Solid, accurate, some nice features

CONs: The model I have (MTG-900ST) does have the 'databank'. Its worthless. It records 30 times you push a button.
No countdown timer.
I don't get how to use the snooze alarm.
No text with alarms to remind you of why you set it. I sometimes set alarms weeks in advance.

Solid watch with useful features
Since I purchased mine over 14 months ago, I am happy with my Ironman. I selected this watch for the Flix feature which allows the wearer to activate the Indiglo light by a flick of the wrist (no button pushing!). This featue really works. Interestingly enough it is "smart" enought to come on when purposefully flicked but stays off during other movements such as running or active sports.

I also bought this Ironman model for the traditional rubber wrist strap. Alot of current models have either crappy non-replaceable rubber bands or woven nylon bands. I wore the stock band until the loop for securing the loose end of the strap broke. Ironically I replaced the band with an after-market nylon band.

The watch face has some scratches on it, but I have used it rather hard during outdoor sports and construction. Otherwise, the watch stands up to some serious use.

Function and timing features are typical Timex. 100 lap memory is nice, but I never use it. I do use the timer though with its repeating options, however.

Summarily, this watch is durable and loaded with useful features especially the Flix Indigo control. ... Read more

Excellent Watch
I have owned the Casio DW-5600E G-Shock Classic Watch for the past 5 or more years now. I've worn it every day in every condition from mountain climbing to river rafting to scuba diving to business boardrooms and it has always functioned perfectly. It seems at home in every situation. I rely on the easy to use features such as the stopwatch, countdown timer and alarm. It is the only travel alarm I take on trips and it has never failed me yet. Quality Product
I bought this watch several months ago and have been pleased with it since.It is quality as opposed to those watches you pay less for.One would naturally expect that but in this day and age paying more does not always equal more quality, but in this case it definitely does.The watch is heavy, and the strap is long enough for most any size wrist (no skimping on strap length) and rugged.In fact, this watch is probably made to wear underwater outside the wet/dry suit but it looks great above water in everyday life!I'm thinking already of buying the same watch in the other color (I have yellow and it is impressive, but it comes in another color as well--that's how much I like it). ... Should Be A Better Watch
My review closely follows "toughcrowd" who wrote an excellent and detailed review.

Remember that the bezel is bi-directional in keeping with the concept of the watch. There's no ratchet/spring device to keep it from moving around which for me was aggravating.

The background UTC and 24 hour subdials are ok with me but should have been designed better to allow for larger time markers. Given the choice I'd rather have larger markers than the two subdials which are not a necessity.

The digital clock/date window is too small and has black LCD figures on a gray background. It needs to be larger and the background color more contrasting with the digits for better visibility. It's hard to read the digital time or date even in daylight. The digital clock and date are useless at night due to no background light.

The time markers and hands do have illuminous coatings. But the hands and markers are so small that they are too dim at night. My experience was that the coatings only held light for a short time-certainly not overnight.

The lack of half-hour time adjustment is unfortunate but will only affect those in Newfoundland, Suriname, Iran, India, Sri Lanka, and Central Australia. Suriname, Iran and Sri Lanka are not on my travel list so this is almost inconsequential.

The alarm volume is way too low and not adjustable.

If you have a skinny wrist and have to take a few links out the watch may become uncomfortable as it did for me.


This indeed is a nice looking watch with many functions but you have to consider its limitations as well. The numerous features and functions of the Eco-Drive are still quite impressive. Except for the Arabic numeral bit, this timepiece is loaded with amenities. It's difficult to find a quality solar-powered watch with so many functions.
I cannot find anyone or any study that shows titanium is more prone to surface damage than stainless steel. In fact it is twice as strong, a third lighter, and is extremely corrosion resistant compared to stainless. Unless you like the polished look of stainless, which is less expensive, go with titanium. I've also researched analog/digital watches solar watches and Citizen is the way to go. The 5-year warranty and the Amazon price are outstanding as well-the retail price is $575.00.

Having said all of that, I ended up not purchasing the watch for the following reasons: I checked the watch out at a local jeweler where I found that taking links out made the watch uncomfortable; trying to read the digital date was extremely annoying, and the markers and coatings were neither big enough nor held light long enough. I give the 51L a marginal recommendation and look forward to continued evolution in design from Citizen and others in the solar/chronograph category. The Skyhawk should rely less on the Blue Angels motif and more on functionality.

Great time piece
This is my most favorite watch. I've owned several, and when I saw this solar powered watch, it was a "gotta have it" as soon as I saw one at the Mall. The hands are easy for me to read and they glow a soft blue at night. The digital display is a little hard to read for me as I'm visually impaired, but I can get by just fine. The heft of the watch is impressive to me. Makes me feel like I have a fine piece of "equipment" on my arm. All the features work well for what I use it for. Alarms, timers, etc. I'm sure the titaineum model would be lighter on my arm, but I like watches that I know they are on my arm. I wear it to work, church, and for just about everything. I hope more eco drive watches come out. I have another one that looks like the "you know what --lex" with the 24 hour hand. It's also Eco Drive. The Blue Angels watch keeps great time and is easy to set. Buy it you'll like it.

Nice watch, could be better
I purchased this watch because I wanted a solar-powered watch with analog-digital display (plus the usual things that go with a digital watch, i.e. alarms, stopwatch, and countdown timer). The only analog-digital solar watches I found included the Citizen Skyhawk, Citizen Sailhawk (JR4000 and JR4010), Citizen JR0006 (discontinued, but still available on some sites), the Casio atomic WVA430xxx (there are several incarnations, thus the 'x's'), Casio WVA510x, Casio AWS90x, and the Casio PAG60 line (watches that sport barometer, thermometer, and compass functions).The Casios (those I could find in stores) all seemed rather bulky and "plasticky."The discontinued JR0006 had a more primitive power management system and lacked a coordinated analog and digital display, and I didn't need the Sailhawk's yacht racing timer.I went with the Skyhawk in stainless, because I had read that titanium was more prone to surface injuries and I didn't think the weight would be a problem.The watch looks great and, indeed, the weight doesn't bother me, even though my benchpressing limit is probably about 20 pounds. The power save function really works. A moment after I took it out of the box, the hands started to spin around until they came to the right time; it had kept the time correctly for however many months or years it had been sitting in that box! It is NOT true, as many people have written, that this watch lacks luminous coatings, or that they lose their glow very quickly. The coatings seem very similar in brightness to those on my Seiko Diver's watch (which are very bright), and remain visible all night long. However, it IS true that the luminous regions are very small in area, so the overall impression is that the watch is a bit dim at night. The circular slide rule on the bezel is very cute. I'm not going to need it to calculate fuel consumption, but I will use it to calculate tips. There are a few things, however, that make this watch less than perfect.First, as others have observed, the watch face is attractive, but not particularly readable. The 24 hour and UTC subdials are adorable, but I can't see that I will ever need either (for any application that requires UTC, I would want to read the time off the more accurate digital display), and if the subdials weren't there the minute marks could have been made larger and more readable.Second, there's no backlight for the digital display, so the digital functions are useless at night. (Casio somehow manages to have a backlight in their solar-powered watches.) Third, it only works with full-hour time zones, so the watch isn't going to work properly in those parts of the world with half-hour time zones. Fourth, in most modes the two buttons are given over to the change-time zone function. If you want to do things like set the alarm or the countdown timer, you have to fiddle with the crown. But the crown is so beautifully protected that you pretty much have to remove the watch from your wrist before you can manipulate it. Frankly, I might need to change time zones once every couple of months, but I need to set alarms a couple of times a day, and it would have been better if the commonest operations had been the easiest to perform.Fifth, the countdown timer only goes to 99 minutes, which is too short for a lot of timer applications.The timer function display is actually redundant; Citizen might have been able to make better use of the LCD display to allow one to set countdown times in hours and minutes. Sixth, the alarm is very quiet. It won't wake anyone from sleep, and probably won't be heard in a noisy environment, either. In contrast, the alarm on my old Timex Expedition is many times louder, goes into a more insistent mode if ignored, and repeats after an interlude of a few minutes if not cancelled. In sum, buy this watch if you want an attractive analog-digital, solar-powered watch, but recognize that there is a lot of room for improvement, and something better is bound to come out, someday. ... Good product - with two exceptions
I have had three of these watches in the past few years.They function well, do what they'e supposed to do, and are very helpful.However, the printed alphabetic characters underneath each button will wear off in about 18 months, after which you haved to memorize which button corresponds to which alpahbet character.Not as hard as you might think, but irritating.Secondly, the watch case pin holes where the watch band pin attaches the band to the case will tend to erode or pull out over time.I've had to replace one perfectly good watch because I couldn't get a replacement band to attach.

Great Organizer!
I bought this for my husband who has had the the same one for about 10 years. His finally stopped keeping a charge and he lost all his data. Figured it was time for a new one. He uses the watch as his calendar and date organizer. He puts all his appointments into the watch. The watch front shows the whole week as little boxes along the top and little ovals will appear in the boxes if you have set an appointment for that day. He uses it daily and also keeps notes on his watch. The only problem he has had is the watch is plastic and the black paint will wear off. The watch band also will break but you can get a cloth/leather replacement band and it will last for alot longer. The watch is waterproof as far being able to be able to go in the shower. I wouldn't recommend going swimming with it. Overall it is a great watch, but would recommend buying a new watch band for it. I would give it 5 stars if the body was made out of metal.

Five stars for functionality but one star for weak body
I have been buying these watches because you can enter appointmentsinto the watch's memory using its keyboard rather than having to rely on a PC-based interface. The watch also has stopwatch and timer functions that I like. Other watches seem to lack this particular functionality. They rely on PC's to do the input which is inconvenient when you don't have a PC around.
Five stars for functionaliy.
Now to the problem. The body is weak. Typically the part where the pin holding the wrist strap is anchored to breaks off after about two years because the body is plastic. The gasket keeping the watch somewhat water-resistant distends. I wish they'd put this watch in a G-shock body.

Mine just died
After about seven years of great service, my wrist now bears a dead AMW320D (great name, eh, really trips off the tongue).I went in for my third battery replacement and the jeweler told me that corrosion had eaten away at the movement.The first time I replaced the battery I learned that the seal had to be broken and the watch might no longer resist water.The soft rubbery plastic strap died long ago, replaced by a superior twist-o-flex-style metal wrist band.
Now you might think I'm dissatisfied.But I intend to order another the minute (or so -- I don't have a working watch) I finish writing this review.Why?It has been a great watch.Analog plus digital gives me easy-to-read intuitive time checking, along with all the bells and whistles of silicon: multiple times, alarm, stop watch, and calendar.The outer ring on the face lets me rotate the "north" arrow to a future time, say 45 minutes from now, and I know time's up when the minute hand gets there.(I have no idea why the face ring has compass points and degrees marked on it -- to fool one's friends?)The watch has been rugged, holding up to the shock of using hoes and axes, although I didn't push my luck if I remembered to take it off.
I'm looking at my old friend, now motionless and blank, and figure he had a pretty good run.Time's up for this timepiece, at a cost of a little more than $10 per year. Since I bought the last one on display at Mervyn's, I didn't get a box or manual and didn't even know what it was called AMW320D until looking it up on the web just now.AMW320D I didn't even know your name all these great years together.

Best of both watch worlds
This Marine Gear has become one of my favorite watches of all time.And take this from an enthousiastic collector who's tried out quite a few watches.If you're like me, you might like to alternate at times between analog and digital watches.I find myself using an analog watch about 60% of the time because they look great and it's easy to see how much time you've got left.On the other hand, digitals get about 40% of my wrist time, especially when I'm in a casual, sport, or technical mode.

Well, here's a watch that's the best of both worlds.With this Marine Gear, Casio has a real classic "diver" watch both in form and function.

In function, this watch has all the classical functions I like in in the digital line-up: stopwatch, alarm, hourly beep, and date.The digital time and dual time has come in handy, especially travelling.In fact, with the analog hands, you can have three time zones on your watch at once.Also, it is easy to synchronize the digital and analog seconds. In the analog department, the hand are the easy to see-at-a-glance oversized diver fashion.The hour markers are made to show up in the dark.My only disappointment is that the luminosity lasts only for an hour so in the dark; it won't get you through the night.But that's only a minor let-down.

As to form, here's a real classic look in the world of water sport and divers watches.I've found that the hefty steel case, elapsed-time ring, canary yellow dial, and wide black divers strap make a really attractive and tough-looking wrist accessory that get lots of remarks like, "great watch!" from friends.

I first noticed this Marine Gear in about 1989 and immediatly thought, "Wow, gotta get this watch!"(In those days, the first Marine Gears has the function pushers at 8 and four rather than at 8 and 10 on the latest models.) Even though that watch is still working fine after about 15 years, I got a couple of others too.In the mid-90's, Casio put out a models with black and white dials andsteel band.I like them too, though I wear them with the the black divers bands which still seem readily available as replacements.However, after all, I think the Yellow dial model is still the coolest.

Take it from a watch freak who thinks the bigger the better, if you're into the divers style in watches, you'll come to like the size and heft of this Casio and its tough indesructability and maybe come to think too that is one of the greatest of all time.

I can finally buy a new one after 10 years
I have had this watch since 1994 (Ten Years) and it finally stopped working.This watch has been through more than most people will do in a life time.If you are looking for a watch that is going to last, this is the one.

The Duckman
Watch is beautiful and looks good in an adventurous or casual environment with it's gold face.It is a bit heavier than many sport watches (i.e. Casio, Suunto, etc.) with resin bands.As far as the resin band, it tends to split after months of use necessitating replacement.I've owned two of these watches in five years and have cycled through 6 watchbands.

Overall, the watch is a good value, and even after battery replacements waterproof integrity has not been compromised.

Give us a more durable band Casio.If you did this, the AMW320D-9EV Analog/Digital Watch would be a superlative watch.

After replacing the battery for the second time (they last about 3-4 years), my watch had a moisture problem and I couldn't get the fog out of it... the o-ring probably wasn't sealed well.So I gave that one up and bought another just like it.I've had this one for about 4 years now and still think its the perfect watch.It has the digital window with dates, alternate times, and stop watch yet still has an attractive traditional watch style.The only drawback to the standard features is the band...I've found that it lasts only about a year and a half before it breaks...you will definitely want to get a fabric sports band when the stock one gives out. ... Exceptional EVERYTHING -- in short, BUY THIS NOW!
Like many others, I have been a LOYAL Casio fan ever since a friend of mine who was working to become an Underwater Parabolic Welder tell me about 'the toughest watch known to man'.He proceeded to pull the watch off his wrist and throw it as hard as he could on his concrete driveway.I hardly had any time to react before he finished, picked it up and showed me how it had suffered no damage whatsoever (other than a couple of scratches).This was 1987.I have been a Casio Believer ever since.

I have owned I don't know HOW many G-Shock watches over the years and the number has nothing to do with how long they last, I just like to collect 'em so I happen to have several that I still use.My oldest model dates back to probably 1989, and is still going strong by the way.When people say the Casio G-Shock is the toughest watch in the world, they are simply stating a FACT.Recently I have been noticing in reports from Iraq that virtually every US Soldier are wearing G-Shocks.Is it an endorsement?Who knows?All I know is that if these watches can withstand combat conditions, it'll survive anything I can dish out.

Now Casio has finally designed a watch which looks as good at a formal dinner as it does while mountain climbing.Some think that it will never truly *look* quite formal, but I totally disagree.It looks good!The size doesn't matter since I love a good solid watch regardless of size.Do NOT be fooled that because this model can receive signals from the atomic clock in Colorado and is powered by simple sunlight that the watch is HUGE, and that just isn't the case.I know several wrist watches that are just as large and offer much less bang for the buck.Sure, you can shop around to get the best possible price and you may get anywhere from a good deal to a great deal -- but one thing is certain: it is WORTH the prize no matter WHAT you pay.Absolute accuracy, never replace the battery and great looks...what more IS there??

When you hear that a G-Shock watch is tough, unless you are already familiar with their durability, you won't fully understand until you've had a chance to test drive one for a while.My first atomic/solar G-Shock (yes, I own more than one) is going on 3 years old now and only once did the charge fall below 'HIGH' and that was simply because I had stuffed it on my closet shelf for about 3 weeks...and then it was only down to 'Medium'.Casual wear every day will keep the battery at full charge.I can't SWEAR to that, but if this helps any, I wear mine about every 2-3 days and it still shows a full charge.All I can say is this: if you are torn between buying a durable watch to wear while hiking and buying a ridiculously expensive model for formal situations, save yourself and get just this one.Good luck and enjoy!

Kicks ass
Tough watch.I've got the MTG 9200A (metal band, gun-metal finish).Love the fact that it synchronizes with the atomic clock...can't go wrong with that.Looks good on my wrist.Pretty much indestructible.I've owned G-Shocks before, so I'm already a convert.Only had it for a few months, but battery appears to hold charge fairly well (I'm able to get it out in the sun for at least a couple of hours a day).Heard that some people have had problems with the watch holding a charge after a year or so...guess that I'll have to see what happens when I get there.I don't use the "auto-backlight" function, so that probably saves some juice there.Overall, very satisfied with the purchase.

Terrific watch...
I have been a G-shock owner for over 15 years. I have also owned some other brands (Swiss Army, Pulsar, Citizen) and those were some good watches but I always come back to the GShock.

There are several reasons why I like this model of G-shock:

1. G Shock's can never really be considered classy, but this comes a little closer to that designation. I love the steel band and the silver appearance of the watch. It is a watch you can wear hiking (and not be worried that you will break it) and to a night out on the town.

2. Discussion buzz--Few watches can you spend time in a group discussing but this is one watch you can do that with...people are immediately drawn to it because of its appearance (size and color) and it is cool to discuss all the things that this watch can do.

3. Solar--I am tired of replacing batteries in a watch...no need to with this watch.

4. Atomic TimeKeeping--I love how the time is accurate every day. No adjusting. Very cool.

5. Time Zones--If you are traveling quite a bit, it is nice to be able to simply scroll through the time zones and find your location. Nice feature.

Overall--I enjoy this watch because of its functions and its appearance. I also like explaining this watch to other people. This is a great watch...to steal Siskel and Ebert's line, 2 thumbs up!
