I have always lusted after menuki, I think the workmanship is so beautiful, so I was absolutely ecstatic when a dealer friend offered me this pair in a trade. And what a pair they are - ornate, engraved coiled shakudo dragons, decorated with gold whiskers and a sprinkling of gold flowers. For the record, Menuki are small decorative metal fittings worn under the wrappings of the hilts of Katana and Wakizashi Japanese warrior swords and are also very collectable items. It is said that they improve and enhance the grip. Shakudo is the Japanese term for a low gold content alloy which usually consists of between 2-7% gold and the rest copper. Sometimes small amounts of other metals are added. The usual alloy used is a 3% gold alloy/rest copper. Shakudo obtains a durable, purplish black surface color when treated with a suitable solution. This is used to best effect when the shakudo surface is combined with inlays (mechanical or fusion) which then results in high contrast pattern options. Everything about these two are top notch. They are not quite exact matches - one dragon has his head up, the other is looking over his shoulder. One also has a tiny little face hidden in the design - very cool. They are mounted on silver backs that were shaped to fit the pieces and finished with trombone clasps. I think the conversion is an early one, and it is very well done. I guarantee these to be old, at least c. 1900, if not older, and am actually trying to find out if I can determine the artist, I will add that information if I do.
